A fuel cell employing a hydrogen-permeable diaphragm for the anode uses a fused salt electrolyte at an operating temperature of 200- 800‹ C. Palladium or an alloy of palladium with silver, gold or nickel may be used for the diaphragm and the electrolyte may be an alkaline chloride with a source of O- - ions therein.
