[Also in Divisions B1 and C5] A process for preparing an isomerization catalyst comprises dispersing a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table on a partially decationized zeolitic metal aluminosilicate molecular sieve having a crystalline structure, a SiO 2 : Al 2 O 3 ratio greater than 3, a monovalent metal cation to aluminium ratio less than 0.9 and a pore size sufficient to absorb benzene, less than 90% of the aluminium atoms being associated with cations. The Group VIII metal is present on the molecular sieve in an amount of at least 0.05% by weight, specified metals being Pt and Pd. The Group VIII metal may be introduced on to the molecular sieve by any of the following methods :-(1) impregnation using an aqueous solution of a suitable metal compound followed by drying and thermal or chemical decomposition of the metal compound, (2) cation exchange using an aqueous solution of a suitable metal salt followed by chemical reduction of the cation and (3) cation exchange using an aqueous solution of a suitable metal compound in which the metal is in the cationic state with coordinating complexing agents, followed by thermal or chemical decomposition of the cationic complex.
