[Also in Division F2] In a blind rivet device, a mandrel head 16, which may bear ribs 28 and grooves 27, first draws a sleeve 14 into a hollow rivet 13 so that the tail of the latter is expanded and then enters the sleeve, Fig. 11, to expand the sleeve and the rivet tail further and thereafter plugs the rivet and expands it into tight contact with the workpieces 11, 12. The countersunk rivet head 13a may have a collar extension (19), Fig. 2 (not shown), which is flattened, Fig. 11, by the anvil 17 of the riveting tool, when a taper 20 of the mandrel is lodged against a rivet shoulder 18 and rivet material is displaced into a mandrel groove 24 to hold the mandrel head after the stem has broken away at a groove 25. Alternatively, the rivet head 13a may have an internal flare with a step 30, Fig. 13, against which rests a separate collar 31 which is eventually de-' formed and deforms the flare to a conical shape to hold the mandrel head, Fig. 17 (not shown). The combined thickness of the workpieces 11, 12 determines the depth of penetration of the sleeve into the rivet. There may be a thickening 26, Fig. 13, of the rivet adjacent its internal shoulder 18. |
