A milling and drilling machine tool comprises means 56 for supporting tools in a conical array around a spindle 22, means for moving the support means transversely to align a tool with the spindle and means for moving the spindle axially to pick up the tool. A machine table 14 and saddle 11 are movable on round bars 12, 13. The spindle 22 is rotated by a belt drive 23- 25 on a head 18 moved vertically by a screw 19 rotated by a variable speed motor 21 on an over-arm 20. A tool 28<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4 (not shown), has a projection 36 gripped by levers 37, 38 operated by a spring-pressed sleeve 40 which can be released by fluid-pressure. The shank of the tool is gripped by a collet 33 moved axially by the sleeve 40. The tool is located and driven by co-operating teeth 48 on a collar 44 keyed to the tool and a bush 31 on the spindle. If the teeth are not in alignment during tool-loading, further teeth 47 mis-match with teeth on a collar 51 which is forced upwardly to rock a lever 54 and cause spindle-jogging. Each tool is held in the magazine 56 by fingers (65, 66), Fig. 5 (not shown), engaging a groove 71 in the tool. The magazine is rotated by a fluid-pressure motor 76 and a bevel gear 77 on a slide 58 movable on the over-arm 20 by a fluid pressure ram 74. Positioning of the magazine is determined by an analogue generator 80 producing feed-back signals.
