A method and an apparatus for driving a liquid crystal display device are provided to generate second data with an enhanced contrast according to a brightness of a histogram at each step by using a backlight weighting number and an average histogram value. An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) panel(22) displays an image corresponding to a data signal. A data driver(24) supplies the data signal to the LCD panel. A gate driver(26) supplies a scan signal to the LCD panel. An image quality enhancer(42) classifies a brightness component of first data into plural steps to obtain a histogram. The image quality enhancer generates second data with an enhanced contrast based on the brightness of the histogram by using an accumulated coefficient, a backlight weighting number, and an average histogram value, and generates at least one brightness control signal according to the average histogram signal. A timing controller(30) supplies the second data to the data driver and controls the data and gate drivers. A backlight(38) illuminates light on the LCD panel. An inverter(36) drives the backlight according to the brightness control signal. |
