PURPOSE: A display device and a control method thereof are provided to confirm whether or not metadata included in displayed content exists in the display device through a simple motion signal of a remote controller, thereby displaying an advertisement corresponding to necessity. CONSTITUTION: A display device displays video data among metadata and video data received from an external source device(S1800-S1810). If one or more command signals received from a remote controller satisfy a first condition, the display device separately displays a first area which includes the metadata and a second area which does not include the metadata(S1830,S1840). If no command signal satisfies the first condition, the display device displays generated graphic data and the video data at the same time(S1850-S1870).
