A method and an apparatus for driving a flat panel display device are provided to prevent an afterimage by discharging charges at a horizontal line unit. An apparatus for driving a flat panel display device includes an image display unit(12), a power detector(20), a timing controller(30), and an afterimage remover(14). The image display unit includes pixels which are formed at intersections between n gate lines and m data lines. The power detector detects a power off timing of a system power supply and generates a power state signal. The timing controller generates an afterimage removing signal according to the power state signal and controls the image display unit to display an image. The afterimage remover discharges the charges which are charged in the image display unit, every horizontal line by using the afterimage removing signal. |
