A sewing machine includes a thread slackener with a member (41) whose direction of movement intersects the movement of direction of the needle so as to twist the thread and allow any excess of thread length to be drawn off. A sewing machine includes (A) a mechanism for pressing a material to be sewn onto a needle plate; (B) a thread slackener with a member (41) with a direction of movement intersecting that of needle (11) such that a thread is twisted when constrained between needle (11) and the material to be sewn so that an excess of thread length is pulled off, the slackener also having a drive (44) acting in the intersecting direction to drive member (41) such that at each stitch the needle tracks in the intersecting direction; and (C) a control unit for the frequency or amount of drive of drive (44). |
