<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure simultaneity for an imaging element having a plurality of focus detecting areas in calculating the extent of defocusing. <P>SOLUTION: In an imaging element 31 provided in an imaging device 1, imaging pixels are arrayed two-dimensionally, and a plurality of focus detecting pixel arrays e are arrayed between the multiple imaging pixels. Each of the plurality of focus detecting pixel arrays matches one or another of the plurality of focus detecting areas of the imaging device 1. An imaging element drive control circuit 32a repeats reading focus detecting signal arrays out of focus detecting pixel arrays respectively matching focus detecting areas in a time series. The focus detecting signal arrays read out are stored in an internal memory 32c in a time series. A body CPU 32d determines a central time tc of the focus detecting signal arrays that are to be added.
