PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adapter that allows various kinds of optical systems to properly function in a lens interchangeable camera system.

SOLUTION: An adapter includes: a first mount section that is detachably attached to a camera body; a second mount section that is provided separately from the first mount section and is detachably attached to an interchangeable lens; a storage section for storing a software program; and an adapter control section which detects whether the interchangeable lens is attached to the second mount section according to the software program stored in the storage section. When it is detected that the interchangeable lens is attached to the second mount section, the adapter control section prohibits processing for update of the software program.
