A self-extinguishing composition comprises a styrene polymer, an organic compound containing at least 4 carbon atoms, having a chlorine content of 40-75% and in such amount as to give 2-15% of chlorine in the composition, 0.05-5% of an organo-metallic compound of formula MAr2 where M is a transition metal of Groups VIB,VIIB or VIII of the Periodic Table and Ar is an aromatic group, and 0.01-3% of an organic phosphine oxide. The polymer may be polystyrene or a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile, tert.-butyl acrylate, 2,4-dichlorostyrene, a -methylstyrene or divinylbenzene, or may be a graft polymer of styrene and acrylonitrile on polybutadiene. The composition may contain 2-20% of an expanding agent, e.g. n-pentane, and may be foamed. The organometallic compound may be ferrocene, ethyl- or cinnamoylferrocene, the chlorine compound may be a chloroparaffin, or a chlorinated polyisobutylene or polyethylene, and the phosphine oxide may be triphenyl, tributyl, tri-p-chlorophenyl or tri-gamma-pyridyl phosphine oxide. The composition may be dissolved in methylene chloride and cast into sheets.
