1,077,577. Purifying exhaust gases. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. Nov. 17, 1964 [Nov. 26, 1963], No.46714/64. Heading F1B. In a catalytic purifier for exhaust gases comprising catalytic particle 6, Fig. 1, retained by perforated partitions 4, 5, a layer 7 of inert refractory material is positioned between the catalyst 6 and the upstream partition 4. In modifications the exhaust gases pass radially inwards or outwards through annular catalyst beds. The inert material, which may be separated from the catalyst by a gauge screen 8, may be formed of particles of alumina, silica, magnesia, boria, zirconia, porcelain or carborundum; alternatively it may be in the form of a blanket of mineral wool. The inert particles may be of different density or size from the catalyst particles so that, when the screen 8 is omitted, they stay at the top or bottom of the catalyst bed.
