<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymerization initiator capable of providing a polymer in a high yield even if using the vinyl monomer or a solvent which is water-soluble or ionic or the both, and to provide a method for polymerizing a vinyl monomer using the same. <P>SOLUTION: The polymerization initiator is composed of a complex of a metal salt and an organozinc compound represented by t-Bu<SB POS="POST">n</SB>ZnX<SB POS="POST">(2-n)</SB>-(MY<SB POS="POST">m</SB>)<SB POS="POST">l</SB>(wherein n is a real number of 1 to 2; X is one of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine; M is a metal selected from group 1 and group 2 of periodic table; Y is one of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine; m is an integer of 1 to 2; and l is a real number of 0.1 to 6).
