A sliding clasp fastener comprises a pair of elongated strips 1 each having an upstanding portion extending along one edge thereof the upstanding portions having inwardly directed mutually sealingly engageable side faces 9 1 and outwardly directed side faces along which are provided a plurality of outer members 3 having recesses therein, a slider member 7 of generally inverted U shaped cross section which embraces the upstanding portion and outer members and is slidaible therealong to open and close the fastener; and a plurality of interconnected fastening members 6 of generally inverted U shaped cross section over which the slider member is slidable, which fastening members in the closed condition of the fastener are disposed along the length of the elongated strips, said slider member upon sliding movement to close the fastener being adapted to move the outer members towards each other and to urge the fastening members to a position in which they embrace the upstanding portions and outer members of both said strips, and fingers 6 1 carried by said fastening members engage in the recesses in the outer members whereby the inwardly directed side faces of the upstanding portions are retained in sealing engagement by said fastening members. In the construction shown the fastening members 6 are connected together by a flexible connecting member 8 and the strips are reinforced by inextensible tapes 2 to prevent stretching in the longitudinal direction of the tapes and the member 8 is an extension of the left hand tape 2 so that the fastening members are linked to the left hand strip 1. The member 8 includes a fold 8 1 lying on top of the upstanding portions of the strips I when the fastener is closed; the member 8 is perforated to facilitate bending along a predetermined line. The outer members 3 are connected to each strip 1 by means of a bead 4 of the strip which engages grooves in the outer members. The slider is so constructed that it first engages the pairs of members 3 by means of lead-in portions 7 2 which press the members towards each other and then hold them in such position by tongue portions 7 3 ; there is a pair of tongue portions at each end of the slider member. A track 7 1 which is curved in a vertical plane is also provided along each side of the slider member and is arranged so that the bottoms of the fastening members 6 rest upon it, the track moving the fastening members into and out of engagement with the members 3 depending upon the direction of movement of the slider member. In a modification instead of the member 8 being connected to one of the tapes 2 it is a separate member. |
