The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1079100/C2/1> where R and R1 are alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms, or R1 is H, and A is an alkylene radical of 4-11 carbon atoms. The compounds are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1079100/C2/2> where X is a halogen, with an alkali metal alkoxide of 1-4 carbon atoms in an anhydrous alkanol and, if desired, saponifying the ester formed with an alkaline base. The trihalogenated compound may be prepared by the action of halogen on the corresponding cycloalkanone. The hydroxy-acid may be decarboxylated by heating in an inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen, to give the cycloalkenol. The cycloalkenol may then be hydrolysed to a cycloalkenone, e.g. by a strong acid in an aqueous organic medium. Missing Page 128
