An organic electroluminescent element is provided with: an anode; a cathode; two or more light emitting units, each of which has a light emitting layer and which are sandwiched between the anode and the cathode; and a charge generating layer sandwiched between the light emitting units. The charge generating layer has an N-layer on the anode side and a P-layer on the cathode side, and the P-layer comprises a compound represented by formula (I).
