PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent occurrence of image persistence or flickers.

SOLUTION: A dummy pixel 111 is disposed in a periphery of a pixel 110. To a pixel electrode 118d of a liquid crystal element 120d possessed by the dummy pixel 111, a first voltage higher than a reference voltage and a second voltage lower than the reference voltage are applied at times shifted from each other. A ratio of an effective voltage of a positive voltage to an effective voltage of a negative voltage, applied to a liquid crystal element 120 possessed by the pixel 110 is varied based on current flowing in a second counter electrode 109 when the first voltage is applied and the second voltage is applied.
