A method for decomposing a biological substance with a microorganism supported on a carrier, the method being characterized in that the carrier is a hydrous polyvinyl alcohol carrier and 20 to 500 parts by weight of the biological substance and 5 to 70 parts by weight of water relative to 100 parts by weight of the hydrous polyvinyl alcohol carrier are mixed and agitated together in a reaction vessel. The method enables the efficient decomposition of a biomass. The method also enables the efficient production of a liquid fertilizer comprising an aqueous solution containing a decomposition product of a biomass.
