A stop hinge for pivoting windows, comprises two shallow cylindrical cup shaped members, one fitted within the other, and each being mounted on a bracket, wherein the pivotal movement is limited by a slotted plate having one or more projections engaging the one member, and the slots being located over studs fastened to the other member, with means for axial disengagement of the plate from the studs. A cup-shaped member 14 is fitted within a second such member 11, and with interposition of a nylon bush 15; on the interior flat surface of the cup 11 are four studs 18 circumferenitially spaced equally apart but at differing radial distances from the hinge axis. A plate 19 with four slots engaged by the studs has two projections 20 which engage slots in the inner cup 14. The cups are fastened together by a central pin 21. To allow for larger pivotal movement of the window, the plate may be axially released from the studs by means of a second plate 22 between the cup 11 and the slotted plate, the second plate having clearance apertures which slide freely along the studs and being axially displaceable by pressure on a thumb plate 23 acting through stems 24, when the slotted plate is displaced axially from the studs against a return spring 25.
