A display device (100) is provided with a display (1), a screen brightness detector (5), an average luminance level computation unit (9), and a luminance controller (6), the luminance controller (6) being provided with: a maximum suitable display luminance determination unit (21) for determining the maximum suitable display luminance for each observer age group from the horizontal viewing angle, the screen brightness, the average luminance level, and the age group of each observer; and a weighted average luminance computation unit (22) for calculating the weighted average luminance obtained by taking the weighted average of the maximum suitable display luminance levels according to the proportion of number of people in each age group.
