<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily detect the presence or absence of a label, a detection mark and a continuous sheet at a detection position on a sheet conveyance path, with a simple configuration. <P>SOLUTION: A printing apparatus includes: a sheet conveyance section 13 for conveying a continuous sheet 1 along a sheet conveyance path R, the continuous sheet including a base sheet 3 attached with a plurality of labels 2 and marked with a black mark 4; a printing portion 14 for printing on each of the labels; mark detectors 34 and 38 having a mark discrimination threshold value for determining the presence or absence of a black mark 4 on the continuous sheet 1 according to an amount of light received by a mark detecting sensor 38; and label detectors 34 and 37 having a label discrimination threshold value for determining the presence or absence of a label 2 on the continuous sheet 1 according to an amount of light received by a label detection sensor 37.
