A harmonic wave protecting method for a capacitor bank, which uses a harmonic wave protecting device for the capacitor ban including: a CPU unit (20), a current and voltage sampling unit (21) and a protecting device (23). The CPU unit (20) obtains the effective value of fundamental current It and the effective value of harmonic wave current In in the capacitor bank, and then calculates the true effective value of current I in the capacitor bank according the following equation (I), wherein kn is the nth harmonic wave factor, n is the harmonic order. The CPU unit (20) controls the protecting device (23) to cut off the capacitor bank when <=1.3IN, wherein IN is the rated current of the capacitor bank.
