TOPICAL ETORICOXIB FORMULATION

The present invention provides pharmaceutical formulations, methods for preparation, and methods of treatment comprising a selective COX-2 inhibitor, a thickening agent, at least one lower alcohol, and water, wherein the formulation comprises about 50% to 80% (w/w) or even 65% to 80% (w/w) of the lower alcohol and water in a ratio of about 2:1 to 8:1. In a preferred aspect, the selective COX-2 inhibitor is etoricoxib. In another preferred aspect, the lower alcohol is ethanol or a mixture of ethanol and isopropanol. Preferably, the formulations enhance permeability and bioavailability of the selective COX-2 inhibitor, and preferably, they are useful for topical treatment of pain or inflammation. In a more preferred embodiment, the method of treatment is directed to pain associated with osteoarthritis.
