1,142,891. Stratified porous carbon bodies. SIGRI ELEKTROGRAPHIT G.m.b.H. 29 April, 1966 [5 May, 1965], No. 19082/66. Addition to 1,132,458. Heading C1A. [Also in Division H1] Stratified porous carbon bodies in which each individual layer is substantially homoporous in itself but has a median pore diameter different from that of adjacent layers are made by compacting substantially binder free particles of cellulose of uniform grain size, each adjacent stratum being compacted at a different pressure and/or in the presence of a different amount of a volatile polar liquid, and carbonizing the compacted material. Water and alcohols are specified as the polar liquids. If the carbon bodies are to be used as electrodes in fuel cells, the polar liquid may be a solution capable of depositing catalyst in the carbon body, e.g. an aqueous solution of copper sulphate or nickel sulphate. |
