The novel 7a - methyl - 17a - ethynyl - estradiol and the novel 3-methyl ether thereof are prepared by reacting 7a -methyl-estrone or the 3-methyl or -tetrahydropyranyl ether thereof with a metal compound of acetylene and, if necessary, removing the tetrahydropyranyl group. Examples are given. 7a - Methyl - estrone tetrahydropyranyl ether is prepared from the free 3-ol and dihydropyran. The steroids of the invention, which are stated to be highly active estrogens, may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions suitable for enteral or parenteral administration. In addition to carriers they may contain preserving, stabilizing, wetting or emulsifying agents, salts for regulating the osmotic pressure, or buffers.
