A package handling system comprises a gravity type rollerway 33 for feeding single packages to a forwarding escapement 32 which prevents overloading of a loader assembly 21. Each package is moved from a pick-off conveyer 21<SP>1</SP>, through 90 degrees, by a transfer conveyer 22, pivotable about axes 210. The conveyer 22 transfers the package to an endless chain elevator 23 from which the package is picked off by a roller conveyer (175), Fig. 6 (not shown). Means on the elevator 23 and the transfer conveyer 22 co-operate to cause the conveyer 22 to remove the package from the pick-off conveyer 21<SP>1</SP>. The conveyer 22 and forwarding escapement 32 co-operate to cause operation of the escapement. Forwarding escapement 32; Figs. 5, 13 (not shown).-A frame (70), rockable about a pivot (71), carries driven rollers (73), (77) and an idler roller (72). The frame also carries a roller (98) which engages the frame (43) of the transfer conveyer (22) when the latter is rocked to the position indicated in Fig. 3 (not shown). A package (P) resting against a stop (76<SP>1</SP>) is then lifted, by a stop and roller (74, 76), over the stop (76<SP>1</SP>) and moves on rollers (36) of the pickoff conveyer (21<SP>1</SP>) to a stop (141). Loader assembly 21, Fig. 2 (not shown).- This includes the transfer conveyer 22 which comprises rollerways (40, 42) driven by a roller (44); rollerways (38, 41) have idler rollers (45). The frame (43) of the conveyer 22 carries spaced fingers (139, 140) which are engaged by cam rollers (138), Fig. 3 (not shown), provided on carries (113) of the elevator 23. The tilting of the frame (43) is controlled by a dashpot (163). Elevator 23, Figs. 6-9 (not shown). -Carriers (113) are mounted on chains (100) and are maintained in position by bell crank levers (115) having rollers (118, 119) which ride in grooves (120, 121). Each carrier comprises idler rollerways (127) and driven rollerways (128), the rollers (130) of the latter being driven by a roller (68). Downward movement of a carrier causes the frame (43) to pivot and raise that section remote from the spaced fingers (139, 140). Since at least some of the rollerways of the transfer conveyer 22 are driven, a package will be passed on to the carrier and against a stop (142). Safety device, Fig. 3 (not shown).-Should a package not be properly placed on a carrier (113), a microswitch (185) will be actuated by a switch arm (180) and the system will be closed down.
