1,088,451. Stiffening shoes. KAUMAGRAPH CO. Sept. 23, 1964 [Sept. 25, 1963], No. 38765/64. Heading A3B. [Also in Division B6] The toe portion of a fabric shoe upper is stiffened by impregnating that portion with a thermoplastic substance from a transfer sheet by heat and pressure. The thermoplastic substance 10 is applied to carrier sheet 12 as shown, fabric shoe cut-outs 14 are superimposed over the patterns, and the combination is fed through pressure roller 16 and heat roller 18 which melts the thermoplastic. In the example shown the absorbed stiffened material becomes planar with the undersurface of the upper blanks, but if the pattern 10 is applied to the top surface of the upper it functions as a decoration or identification means as well as a stiffener. The thermoplastic may comprise polyethylene wax, or a terpine resin, and to increase the elasticity rubber may ,be mixed therewith. Examples of suitable materials are (1) polyterpine resin, polyethylene, and a filler with or without a dye, and (2) depolymerised rubber, paraffin wax, zinc oxide, sulphur accelerators and a filler. |
