A liquid fuel atomizer comprises a first cylindrical whirl chamber 20, provided with a discharge outlet 21, a helical pattern of circular fuel inlet openings 17 and a slidable plunger 22 which may be moved to continuously increase or decrease the number of openings 17 supplying fuel to the chamber. Adjacent openings 17 are arranged so that they overlap in the axial direction of the chamber. The end faces 22A and 22B of plunger 22 are shaped to co-operate with the outlet 21 and a whirl bore in the plunger defines a second whirl chamber 25. A second discharge outlet 26 in the end of plunger 22 opens into the first chamber 20 and a second plunger 30 is a slide fit within the bore in the first plunger. Fuel enters the second chamber via openings 17 and openings 24 in a recessed portion 23 of the plunger 22. Openings 24 are arranged similar to openings 23. Movement of the plungers is limited by pegs and slots 43, 44 and a control rod 40 is connected to second plunger 30 and has disposed between itself and first plunger 22 a spring 42. Fuel enters inlet 12 and flows to the atomizing head through barrel 12. At full load the atomizer is as shown in Fig. 1 but for decreased load a knob 60, threaded to the end of rod 40, is rotated and the plungers 22 and 30 move axially together, without rotating in chamber 20 until faces 22A and 22B seat against co-operating faces surrounding outlet 21. Fuel is now supplied only to second chamber 25. Further rotating of knob 60 will cause plunger 30 to move within plunger 22 to close outlet 26. A block 65 prevents rod 40 being rotated by being guided between bars 55. A micrometer 66 is attached to block 65 to measure the rod's position.
