A ladder 100 including side members 104 and steps 105 is provided with means for visually indicating the steps. The means may comprise LED light sources 107 inset into the treads of the steps or alternatively within the side members to illuminate the steps from the side. The light emitting diodes may be colour coded to indicate the top and bottom steps. An uppermost cross-member 106 may be provided with light sources 108 for orientating in a particular direction, which cross-member may be rotatable within the side members. In the case of a step ladder, a switch 111 may be adapted to turn the lights on as the ladder is deployed into an in-use configuration.
