The heat of polymerization developed in the solution polymerization of an olefin by the low-pressure method using Ziegler-type catalysts or lithium catalysts, is removed by cooling to 3 to 7 DEG C. below the freezing point of the solvent used while stirring a solution of 3 to 10% of a polymerizable olefin having three to six carbon atoms in a hydrocarbon solvent having a freezing point of from + 14 DEG to - 4 DEG C., and then supplying the suspension thus formed to the polymerization stage whereby additional olefin sufficient to achieve the polymerization concentration is directly fed into the polymerization stage or added to the suspension before its introduction into the polymerization stage. Specified olefins are butadiene, 1-3-pentadiene, propylene and butylene while benzene, 1,2,3,4-tetramethylbenzene, p-xylene and cyclohexane are specified solvents. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
