The distance between a main railcar and a satellite railcar used in railway surveying is maintained at a desired value by automatically controlling the prime mover of the satellite railcar in dependence on the intensity of electromagnetic radiation transmitted between the cars. In the arrangement described for railway track surveying infrared radiation from a main railcar is directed towards a satellite railcar, having a self-contained prime mover and running ahead of the main railcar. Whenever the satellite car gets ahead of the main car by more than a distance corresponding to the setting of a rheostat controlling the intensity of radiation, a photo-cell on the satellite car, responsive to the radiation, causes operation of a thermionic valve relay to cut out the satellite prime mover by hydraulic or electric control. The satellite prime mover is thereafter operated intermittently to maintain a constant distance between the cars. A time delay relay is provided to cut out the satellite prime mover, after it has run for a predetermined time, to prevent the satellite car running away on a fault. If it is desired to bring the satellite car towards the main car, a switch is operated to increase the intensity of radiation so that a less sensitive relay is operated by the thermionic valve to cause reverse operation of the satellite prime mover. The radiatlan transmitter may, alternatively be mounted on the satellite car, and a reflector on the main car.
