An electric motor comprising a stator having a plurality of coils, a rotor having a plurality of permanent magnets, means for measuring flux density on the rotor resulting from the interaction of current flowing through the plurality of coils and the plurality of permanent magnets in substantially a tangential direction to the circumference of the rotor, and means for determining a tangential torque on the rotor from the measured tangential flux density. The embodiment of figure 4 shows an arrangement in which the rotor, carrying permanent magnets, rotates around the stator. A laser assembly in the stator illuminates a magneto-optical device on the rotor. The flux density is determined from the polarization of the reflected light.
|
