A vibratory barrel finishing machine has means for introducing liquid into the barrel and outlet means arranged to discharge liquid from the barrel only when the level of liquid in the barrel reaches a predetermined height above the base of the barrel. An open top barrel 10 is supported by springs 11 on frames bolted to shock absorbing mountings bolted to the base 1. A vibrator 15 comprising an electric motor driving a rotary out of balance mass is secured to the underside of the bottom of the barrel. The barrel has at one end a gate 17 openable by a handle 18 for discharging finished parts and media at the end of a finishing cycle. At the other end of the barrel an elbow 21 of a stack pipe 20 is bolted to a boss 24 surrounding an opening 25 in the end wall 19. A perforated plate 28 prevents the passage of parts and media into the stack pipe. The stack pipe 20 is open at its upper end and has three discharge outlets 29. Compound in a tank 3 is pumped by a pump 35 through pipe 37, valve 38, T junction 34 and rotary valve coupling 31, supported by a member 30 secured to the stack pipe, to a sprinkler pipe 32 extending across the top of the barrel and having spray nozzles 33 spaced along its length. A pipe 41 connected to a selected one of the discharge outlets 29 returns the compound to the tank 3 through T junction 42, valve 43 and inlet 44; the other discharge outlets are closed by closure means. The desired level of compound in the barrel is thus maintained. At the end of a finishing cycle, the pump 35 is stopped, valves 38, 43 are closed and valves 39, 46 associated with the T-junctions 34, 42 respectively are opened. Water from supply pipe 40 than passes to sprinkler pipe 32 and into the barrel, and is discharged to drain, thus flushing the barrel and its contents before emptying the barrel.</p> |
