A tobacco distributer with a radial centrifuge 128 has an axial intake connection 126 and an outlet slot 137 at the periphery into which opens a co-axial ring- shaped delivery duct 169 which embodies an opening 176 covered by an air permeable rotatably driven screen 140 disposed radially outwardly of the centrifuge and a second opening 174 disposed radially outwardly of the centrifuge, and means for blowing air through the opening 174, screen 140 and opening 176 in succession. Tobacco 104 is fed by the assembly 103, 105, 116 and 106 to a weighing device 108-113, which may be as described in Specifications 1,065,731 and 1,079,288, which delivers it in weighed amounts to a conveyer belt 123 leading to the centrifuge intake 126. A vertically adjustable roller 124 minimises the entry of air into the intake 126, controlled amounts of air being admitted if necessary through a pipe 164. The intake 126 opens into the centrifuge 128 consisting of a fixed disc 129 and a lower disc 130 driven at high speed by a motor 136 connected to a pulley 134. The distributed tobacco is forced outwardly through the slot 137 and into the duct 169 where is forms a ring of tobacco 150 on the screen 140 which is mounted on a carrier 138 rotatably driven by a pulley 166. The centrifuge is arranged in a casing 127 divided into air chambers 142 and 143. A blower 149 blows air into the chamber 142 through a connection 152, the air passing through the screen 140, and serving to hold the tobacco thereon, before returning to the intake of the blower from, chamber 143 via a connection 148. The screen 140 passes at one part of its peripheral travel into an off-take pipe 146 through which air is blown by a blower 147 to remove the tobacco from the screen for subsequent processing. In an alternative embodiment two distributers are connected in series (Fig. 2, not shown). The first distributor is arranged substantially as the distributer of Fig 1 and the off-take pipe leads directly into the axial intake of the second distributer. The second distributor is arranged so that both discs of the centrifuge rotate and the off-take may be effected tangentially of the screen by conveyers or by a suction pipe (Figs. 3 and 6, not shown). The air chambers of the distributers are connected so that air passes from the blower into the upper chamber of the first distributer, through its screen and into the lower chamber of the first distributer, thence into the upper chamber of the second distributer, through its screen and into the lower chamber of the second distributer, and finally back to the blower. A branch connection may provide the air for the off-take pipe of the first distributer.
