To produce hot gases apparatus has a combustor 20 for solid fuel (e.g. biomass such as woodchip), air supply to the combustor 20, and a gas pass (40, fig 1) comprising at least a first duct 44 where combustion gases flow with a helical flow. Air from fans 27 helps maintain helical flow. Combustor 20 can have a moving grate. Helical flow increases dwell time to allow fuller combustion. The apparatus has a plenum 46 to collect ash, a second duct (48, fig 1) with helical flow, a heat exchanger 60 producing flash steam for electricity generation, an exchanger bypass 51, a mixing chamber (70, fig 3) with cooling air, and a fuel drier. |
