At least 0.25% of a linear polyether is dispersed throu ghout a linear aromatic polyester fibre. The molecular weight of the polyether may be above 2000. Polyethers specified are polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, and fatty acid esters thereof, copolymers of ethylene and propylene glycol and monophenyl ethers of polyethylene glycol. Polyesters specified are poly-(ethylene terephthalate) and poly-(1,4-dimethylene cyclohexane terephthalate). The polymers are mixed prior to fibre formation by one of the following methods: (a) dry mixing; (b) treating the polyester with a solution of the polyether in a liquid which does not dissolve the former, allowing excess solution to drain off, evaporating the remaining solvent and drying the polyester by subjection to heat and/or reduced pressure; (c) spraying a liquid polyether on to rods, pellets or powder of the polyester; (d) mixing 5-30% of the polyether with a low molecular weight polyester and mixing the composition so formed with a high molecular weight polyester or (e) mixing on hot rollers. Solvents specified for (b) are: water, methanol, ethanol, propanols, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, methyl acetate, CH2Cl2, C2H4Cl2, benzene, toluene an hexene. The mixture may contain up to 5% of the polyether. |
