The invention relates to the use of oxaloacetate in the treatment of ischaemia. The invention provides quantities that are therapeutically effective for the treatment of disorders associated with high levels of glutamate in brain tissue, such as, for example, cerebral ischaemia. In addition, the compositions of the invention are suitable for bolus-type delivery.
