A method for capturing an iris-image free from the specularities that arise from direct reflection from spectacles or glasses 7. The method is for use in an iris recognition identification system. The method comprises illuminating the user's eyes 3b from a first position 11d associated with a first optical path, and capturing a first image of the eye; then determining if the first image comprises a specular image, or glare, in a region of interest. If a specular image is present, the method further comprises illuminating the eye from a second position 11b associated with a second optical path, different to the first path, such that the specular image is shifted, and capturing a second image of the eye. The different optical paths may be achieved by moving the position of the illumination source, or the image capture device 9a,9b. Alternatively, the illumination source may comprise a number of individual sources, each of which can be selected, thus varying the position of the light source. The individual sources may be located on a special angled block 49. |
