<p>A drying apparatus 200 for drying a fibrous material including, a heater 10 arranged to heat a first gas stream and a fibrous material, the first gas stream arranged to enter the drying apparatus at an inlet, the gas stream including steam from a steam injection device. A separator 4 is provided for separating a said fibrous material from the first gas stream to form a second gas stream, and a fan 6 and a duct 8 are arranged to re-circulate the second gas stream to the process heater and steam injector. A flow variation apparatus 20 is arranged to vary the flow of gas in a first gas stream and improve the drying function due to increased heat and mass transfer between the gas stream and the fibrous or granular matter. The flow variation apparatus is preferably a cyclical variation device in the form of a mechanical disk (21, fig 3) which rotates and includes openings (23, fig 3) for the gas stream.</p> |
