Antioxidants for rubber have the formula wherein X is 0, 1 or 2, R is H, C1- 8 alkyl, C5- 8 cycloalkyl or C1- 8 alkoxy, and R1 is C4- 8 tertiary alkyl or C5- 8 cycloalkyl.ALSO:The invention comprises ethers (a) obtained by reacting a mono-, di- or tri-chloromethylated diphenyl oxide with a phenolic compound in presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, (b) obtained by reacting the products of process (a) with a C4- 8 tertiary olefinic material and (c) of formula wherein X is 0, 1 or 2, R is H, C1- 8 alkyl, C5- 8 cycloalkyl or C1- 8 alkoxy, and R1 is C4- 8 tertiary alkyl or C5- 8 cycloalkyl; the latter compounds are obtained by either of processes (a) or (b).
