<FORM:1102835/C2/1> Lincomycin D, an antibiotic, is produced by growing Streptomyces lincolnensis var. lincolnensis in a fermentation broth as in Specification 976,765, but further characterized by the addition of 0.75 to 8 gm/litre of methyl thiolincosaminide (Specification 1,008,647). A mixture of lincomycin and lincomycin D is obtained by treating the clarified broth with (a) surface active adsorbents e.g. activated C; or (b) cation exchange resins. The mixture of lincomycin and lincomycin D is dissolved in water at pH 10 and is extracted with a solvent for lincomycin e.g. methylene chloride. The residual aqueous solution is extracted with a solvent for lincomycin D. The solid extract is dissolved in methanol and the hydrochloride precipitated by means of ether. Further purification of the hydrochloride is obtained by counter current distribution using n-butyl alcohol and water. Lincomycin D forms salts with inorganic and organic acids e.g. succinic, citric, maleic, fumaric, pamoic, cholic, palmitic, mucic, camphoric, glutaric, glycolic, phthalic, lauric, stearic, undecylenic and many other acids. Lincomycin D hydrochloride is soluble in water and methanol; relatively insoluble in acetone, ethyl acetate, methylene chloride, chloroform and ether; has elemental analysis C = 45.62%, H = 7.78%, N = 6.23%, S = 7.31%, Cl = 7.82%, O = 25.24 (by diff.); [a ]25D = + 149 DEG (C = 0.923 in water); mol. weight 450 /sB 20; no absorption maxima in U.V.; I.R. as in Fig. 2. Exhibits a characteristic papergram (Fig. 1, not shown). Lincomycin D may be incorporated in an animal feed as a growth promoter, with or without other antibiotics.ALSO:A bacteriostatic rinse for washing hands, cleaning objects and treating laundered clothes comprises as active ingredient thereof the antibiotic lincomycin D.
