An electric drive system includes a drive motor (2), a control motor (4), a drive output (8) and transmission system (6) for transmitting, drive from the drive motor and the control motor to the drive output. The transmission system (6) includes an epicyclic gear set comprising a sun gear (10) that is drivingly connected to the drive motor (2), a planet gear (12) mounted on a planet gear carrier (14) that is drivingly connected to the drive output (8), and a rotatable annulus (16) that is drivingly connected to the control motor (4). The transfer of drive from the drive motor (2) to the drive output (8) can be controlled by operation of the control motor (4).
