PURPOSE: A plate swerving detecting apparatus for a rolling mill and a control method thereof are provided to cope with the swerving of plates in rolling work and to analyze the plate swerving of coils based on stored data. CONSTITUTION: A plate swerving detecting apparatus for a rolling mill comprises a vibration detecting part(10) and a control part. The vibration detecting part detects the impact vibration of strips in both sides of a side guide installed between rolling stands of a rolling mill. The control part signal-processes the amount of vibration inputted from the vibration detecting part in order to calculate the swerving amount of the strips, thereby determining the swerving of plates.
