Excipient comprises substituted propylene oxy compounds (I) and (II). Excipient comprises substituted propylene oxy compounds of formula (R-X-(CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-O) n-(G) y-(OR1a) m) (I) and (Z-O-(CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-O) n-H) (II). X : -O- or -C(=O)-O-; n : 1-20, preferably 3-8; m : 0-3; G : monosaccharide; y : 1-5, preferably 1-2; R : linear or branched, optionally saturated 6-30C- or 5-29C-hydrocarbyl; R1a : H or R-C(=O)-; and Z : R or (G) y. Provided that: when X is -O-, then R is linear or branched, optionally saturated 6-30C hydrocarbyl, R1a is H and Z is R; and when X is -C-(=O)-O-, then R is linear or branched, optionally saturated 5-29C hydrocarbyl, R1a is H or R-C(=O)- and Z is (G) y. An independent claim is included for preparing the excipient comprising reacting a polytrimethylene glycol compound of formula (H-O-(CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-O) n-H) or its monomer (i) and at least one fatty alcohol compound of formula (ROH) in the presence of an acid catalyst to form an alkylated polytrimethylene glycol compound of formula (R-O-(CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-O) n-H) (ii), and reacting (ii) and at least one monosaccharide in the presence of acid catalyst to form the excipient comprising substituted propylene oxy compounds of formula (R-O-(CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-O) n-(G) y-(OR1a) m) (iii) and (R-O-(CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-O) n-H) (iv).
