摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode active material which achieves a larger charge/discharge capacity in an electrochemical cell, and to provide a manufacturing method thereof. <P>SOLUTION: In a diffraction spectrum measured by powder X-ray diffraction, the negative electrode active material is an inorganic layer substance containing a transition element, the diffraction angle 2&theta; of which has a diffraction peak in a range of 8.92&plusmn;0.15&deg;. The negative electrode active material is obtained by pulverizing an inorganic layer substance containing a transition element, and then calcining the powder thus produced at a temperature of 100-600&deg;C. As the inorganic layer substance containing the transition element, a layer silicate mineral belonging to a vermiculite group containing the transition element is especially preferable.
