Phenols which have been prepared by the partial oxidation of a secondary alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon followed by acid-catalysed cleavage of the hydroperoxide so formed may be purified at least partially of carbonyl compounds by neutralizing the cleavage reaction mixture, separating from the neutralized mixture a fraction containing the phenol and carbonyl impurities, mixing this with water and contacting the resulting mixture at elevated temperature with a catalytic composition consisting of silica-alumina, silica-zirconia, alumina-zirconia or silica-alumina-zirconia, thus converting the carbonyl compounds to compounds having lower boiling points and distilling these compounds from the phenol. The process is particularly suitable for the purification of phenol itself, obtained by the acid cleavage of cumene hydroperoxide, but may also be used for the purification of phenols obtained by the acid cleavage of the peroxides of o-isopropyltoluene, m - isopropyltoluene, p - isopropyltoluene, p-diisopropylbenzene, sec.-butylbenzene and b -isopropylnaphthalene. The temperature used for carrying out the treatment with the catalyst is in the range 150-250 DEG C.
