<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting element with improved linearity of an optical output to a driving current. <P>SOLUTION: A light-emitting element made from a GaAs compound semiconductor and having a peak emission wavelength ranging from 950 to 980 nm includes a first semiconductor layer of a first conductivity type and a second semiconductor layer of a second conductivity type provided on the first semiconductor layer. The light-emitting element further includes a first electrode provided on the second semiconductor layer and a second electrode electrically connected to the first semiconductor layer.
