Provided is a fuel cell system capable of controlling an increase in the internal pressure of an anode caused when starting to generate power. A fuel cell system is provided with a membrane electrode assembly, a sealing structure applied to the membrane electrode assembly, a fuel supply unit, an oxidizing agent supply unit, and a control unit for controlling the fuel supply unit and the oxidizing agent supply unit. The membrane electrode assembly has an anode, a cathode, and an electrolyte membrane interposed between the anode and the cathode. The fuel supply unit supplies liquid fuel to the anode. The oxidizing agent supply unit supplies an oxidizing agent to the cathode. The control unit initiates supply of the liquid fuel from the fuel supply unit to the anode, and then continuously supplies the cathode with the oxidizing agent from the oxidizing agent supply unit, during the preparatory operation of the membrane electrode assembly when starting to generate power.
