[Also in Group XXIX] A seat 46, shown in Fig. 6 in cross-sectional plan and in Fig. 7 in sectional, developed form, for a rotary valve member 26 having a ported facing 42 of bearing material has ports 50, 52 communicating with pipes 82, 84 and an elongated or arcuate port 54 provided with adjustable partitions 60, 62, 64 whereby the period during which each of the ports 44 communicates with one of a series of pipes 86, 88, 90, 92 opening to the arcuate port can be adjusted. The valve may be used with an arrangement of sector-shaped moving-cell filter elements each of which is connected to one of the ports 44 and rotates with the member 26 about the axis of the latter on rollers as described in Specification 904,300. After the material to be filtered has been deposited on one of the cells the corresponding port 44 moves over the chamber connected to the pipe 86 which is subject to suction to draw off the liquid. As the valve member and filter cells continue to rotate successive wash liquids are supplied to the cells and are drawn off by suction applied to the pipes 88, 90, 92. Each cell is inverted as its port 44 reaches the port 50 to which air or steam under pressure is supplied to assist in removing the filter cake. The cell then resumes its normal position and is subject to suction through the port 52 to remove any remaining liquid and to restore the filter cloth to its flat condition. Each of the partitions 60, 62, 64 is pivoted at 68 on a spindle permitting adjustment from the outside and consists of a rigid plate enveloped in rubber &c., to permit deformation at the side edges where it engages the side walls of the port 54 and at the upper and lower edges to permit it to be adjusted while remaining in contact with facing 42 and with the base of the port 54. Alternatively the upper edge may be rigid and spaced from the facing 42. Also the portions of the side walls of the port 54 with which the partitions 60, 62, 64 coact may be straight instead of curved to facilitate sealing of the partitions. The invention is also applicable to valves in which the relative motion between the parts 26, 46 is rectilinear instead of rotary.</p> |
