METHOD FOR OBTAINING A PURE CULTURE OF MULTICILIATED EPENDYMAL CELLS

The invention relates to a method for obtaining a pure culture of multiciliated ependymal cells using explants from the ventricular wall of adult rodent brains. The ependymal cells are separated from the explant by means of incubation in a culture medium at low temperature, followed by proteolytic digestion. After culturing the explant for 24 hours, most of the ependymal cells and 7% of other cell types detach. The ependymal cells are purified after 48 hours of culture in an essential medium with no additives or growth factors and with low cell density. Under these conditions only the ependymal cells survive and the limited number of contaminating cells die, such that a pure suspension of ependymal cells is obtained.
